Stepping Outside the Formatory Mind

For positive change to become the path we travel in life, we must learn how to think for ourselves. This is what some call the Work. What it’s called doesn’t really matter. What matters is understanding the process involved.

First, let us acknowledge that thinking is not the same as fixed opinions or remembering things. Thinking requires asking questions, seeking answers from different sources, analyzing new information with what you already know, and most importantly, not mindlessly accepting what others tell you is true.

Why is it important for you to think for yourself, especially when it involves your perspective on your individual life and the world around you? Let’s look at it this way. If the question were asked: Who am I? Would you be content with me answering this question for you? I certainly hope not. You must light a fire within yourself to dig deeply within, to toss aside the attitudes of others about who you are; in other words, you must think.

When you allow yourself to simply accept the interpretations by others of principles or ideas that have become set in concrete over time, what does this mean for you? It means you are asleep. Your Being is not participating in the Work of change. What you think you know simply exists in your formatory mind, a repository of thoughts and opinions you have imprudently accepted as true. In other words, you have simply accepted a set of rules and are attempting to assure yourself you are ticking off all the boxes.

I have known many people in my lifetime who answer most questions about who they are or what they think about something by quoting Bible scriptures. These are people who are very asleep. Strict religious dogma is the formatory mind in action. It defines spirituality through the perspective of man asleep, caught in the throes of his fears and subpersonalities. It separates everything into opposites, yes or no, black or white. Religion clings to literal interpretations because the formatory mind functions from a consciousness of security, sensation, and power. These are considered the three lower levels of man’s experiences and reflect a man asleep.  Security and power create an “us vs. them” mentality, and sensation creates the opposites of boredom vs. thrills. The religious formatory mind does not have the ability to understand the intricacies necessary for spiritual thought.

Spiritual thought requires the ability to blend those opposites into a new understanding and to think from a place which is free of negative emotions and preconceived notions.  Spirituality requires a mind open to ideas that have never been considered before, ideas that carry you into new levels of experience, understanding, and love.

Before you get on the defensive, all of us on this planet are asleep. The only difference is in degree. The process for positive change mentioned above can allow us to be awake for portions of our days. I know you’ve heard the saying, It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. The moments of awakening we experience build our confidence in who we are and in our creative gifts far beyond what those in our spheres of influence offer us.

Each time we are able to awaken and observe ourselves in the light of the process mentioned, we are more able to be present in the moment, aware of all our senses – emotional, intellectual, and physical – and make mindful decisions of how we respond, rather than simply reacting like a sleepwalker.

What Is Required of You During a Transition?

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. It is that to which we are saying Yes! During a time of transition, it is very important for a person to examine the ideas, the feelings, the actions to which he or she is saying Yes!

Are your actions, feelings, and ideas in harmony with the future you want for yourself? Will these actions, feelings, and ideas provide a sustainable foundation for your goal? Are you willing to stick with your decisions long enough to allow things to gel?

In order to change one’s life, strength is required. Strength is the idea of persistence or tenacity – the ability to hold to a selected course. It is this tenacity that serves to increase your faith in your ability to affirm the best for yourself.

Despite having the strength to hold to a selected course, however, you must also allow yourself to be discerning, to recognize when decisions along the way are not in line with your goal. Then you must have the strength to make better decisions that do align.

Does your goal involve other people? If so, have you ever thought about the fact that each person in an organization is like a cell in a body? Consequently, your actions, your state of mind, and the words you speak affect the entire organization. You each contribute to the consciousness that will draw your success to you. There is always resistance to any goal, and that resistance strives to keep things the same. Giving in to it is so easy, and that is why one of the twelve Divine Ideas is strength. It keeps you on your path, moving toward your goal with an expectant heart and mind. You may have to gently remind each other as you move forward, and that's okay. After all, you are all in this together.

True Confession...

Passion stirs your soul, and the words slam against the edges of your mind, trying to escape, until finally your fingers fly across the keyboard. Your passion has now moved from the metaphysical to the physical. Your creation has taken form. Your world is afire with the energy of your creation. Then suddenly, it is over. The last word is on paper.

You breathe. Perhaps for the first time in weeks or months, you are aware of the world around you. You have left that fictional world or perhaps that imaginary classroom, and you are back in your world. What now? You are faced with the truth that despite your intense connection with your work, no one else has reason to feel as you do. You are faced with the task of marketing your book, and this is where your perspective on your dream will often begin to shift. You post on social networking sites. You and everyone else inundates people with reviews and excerpts until they aren't even noticed anymore. You set up a web site to promote your work. You get some rave reviews, but you realize over time that word-of-mouth is unlikely to be your friend because most of your readers are other authors dedicated to peddling their own creations. You look around, and you feel like that tiny speck in the cosmos that exists, but no one can really see.

There is a shift, and it changes your dream, changes your view on what you do and how you do it. This shift happened for me. I have been involved in writing longer than many indies, but not as long as some. I welcomed the advent of CreateSpace and Kindle for ease of production, both physically and financially, and for easy access by readers. However, trying to reach readers has become less effective and too time-consuming because it takes me away from my passion for too long.

So what was my shift? I write once again because passion stirs my soul, and the words slam against the edges of my mind, trying to escape, until finally my fingers fly across the keyboard until my creation takes form. When the last word is on paper, I breathe with contentment. I introduce my creation to the world and trust it has the strength to soar because I have given it a piece of my soul.

I have been studying the human psyche and its wonderful and often frustrating journey for over four decades. It was only natural that my love of writing and teaching became part of this journey.

My writings are dedicated to those who are willing to search  outside the box for meaning in their lives, who are willing to shift their view of the world just enough to recognize they are unique expressions, and who are willing to do the inner work to improve their understanding of who they are.

I will read forever because it lets me visit in my mind the worlds that I will never be able to see; it helps me put away the stresses of the day and relax into the rhythm of the story before me; it lets me bring to the surface and experience without regrets those feelings I hide away; it lets me re-experience the thrill of first love through someone else's eyes; it keeps my mind juiced so that it will never desert me; it is always there for me even when there's no one else. I will read forever no matter whether it is print or digital because the words will always call to me. ~ A Sassy Scribbler
