Passion stirs your soul, and the words slam against the edges of your mind, trying to escape, until finally your fingers fly across the keyboard. Your passion has now moved from the metaphysical to the physical. Your creation has taken form. Your world is afire with the energy of your creation. Then suddenly, it is over. The last word is on paper.
You breathe. Perhaps for the first time in weeks or months, you are aware of the world around you. You have left that fictional world or perhaps that imaginary classroom, and you are back in your world. What now? You are faced with the truth that despite your intense connection with your work, no one else has reason to feel as you do. You are faced with the task of marketing your book, and this is where your perspective on your dream will often begin to shift. You post on social networking sites. You and everyone else inundates people with reviews and excerpts until they aren't even noticed anymore. You set up a web site to promote your work. You get some rave reviews, but you realize over time that word-of-mouth is unlikely to be your friend because most of your readers are other authors dedicated to peddling their own creations. You look around, and you feel like that tiny speck in the cosmos that exists, but no one can really see.
There is a shift, and it changes your dream, changes your view on what you do and how you do it. This shift happened for me. I have been involved in writing longer than many indies, but not as long as some. I welcomed the advent of CreateSpace and Kindle for ease of production, both physically and financially, and for easy access by readers. However, trying to reach readers has become less effective and too time-consuming because it takes me away from my passion for too long.
So what was my shift? I write once again because passion stirs my soul, and the words slam against the edges of my mind, trying to escape, until finally my fingers fly across the keyboard until my creation takes form. When the last word is on paper, I breathe with contentment. I introduce my creation to the world and trust it has the strength to soar because I have given it a piece of my soul.
