Want to Feel Better than You Ever Thought Possible?

I once knew someone who always answered the question, "How ya doin?" with "I'm doing better than I ever thought possible!" Every time I heard him say it, I would cringe and say to myself, "I wonder if he really believes that?"

My dilemma was that he looked like he was doing that well! To make a long story short, it was apparently having a positive impact on him. So I decided to try saying it myself.

At first, I was very self conscious because saying it felt out of character for me. It felt like I was lying to myself, and many times I didn't really feel as though I were doing that well. However, from the very start I enjoyed the reaction I was getting from people. Some just smiled. Some cringed, giving me that familiar look that said, "I wonder if he really believes that?"  What I noticed, though, was that regardless of my mood at that moment, I always felt better after saying, ""I'm doing better than I ever thought possible!"

For most of us, our lives don't change in large ways. They change a little at a time, and much of this change happens because of what we say to ourselves. Many books have been written about the power of "self talk" and how it can influence your life in either a positive or negative way.

How do you know if you say to someone, "I'm doing better than I ever thought possible! that it will not only change you, but will also ignite in others the desire to think more positively? Go ahead and try it! It will grow on you as well as in you. You may find yourself enjoying your life despite what is going on around you.

An Angel on Your Shoulder

How much would you pay for a service that nudged you every time you lost your temper, let someone's remarks deflate you, snapped at someone for no reason, started spiraling downward into depression, or put yourself down? Sound great? It would be a little like having an angel on your shoulder, wouldn’t it?

The bad news is—there's no such service out in the world anywhere. The good news is—you are hard-wired to create your own personal angel called a Self-observer, and it's FREE! It is an extension of your Higher Self, which is why it is objective, non-judgmental.

Your Self-Observer is an ever present part of yourself that whispers in your ear to wake you up to what is going on. It is not your conscience because there is no guilt or celebration connected to it. It simply observes and reports. The rest is up to you.

It takes time to develop your Self-Observer—time and a full commitment to the work of change. It is especially useful in working with your subpersonalities! (We'll talk about these another day.)

One last thing: Remember when we talked last time about the NOW? Well, developing the Self-observer helps you move toward having more conscious control of the wanderings of your mind and the less than desirable actions that may follow. It brings you closer to living in the NOW.

I have been studying the human psyche and its wonderful and often frustrating journey for over four decades. It was only natural that my love of writing and teaching became part of this journey.

My writings are dedicated to those who are willing to search  outside the box for meaning in their lives, who are willing to shift their view of the world just enough to recognize they are unique expressions, and who are willing to do the inner work to improve their understanding of who they are.

I will read forever because it lets me visit in my mind the worlds that I will never be able to see; it helps me put away the stresses of the day and relax into the rhythm of the story before me; it lets me bring to the surface and experience without regrets those feelings I hide away; it lets me re-experience the thrill of first love through someone else's eyes; it keeps my mind juiced so that it will never desert me; it is always there for me even when there's no one else. I will read forever no matter whether it is print or digital because the words will always call to me. ~ A Sassy Scribbler
