What Kind of Reader Are You?

Do you like the journey of discovery or do you prefer the chase? In a mystery book, you don’t know who the culprit is. You unravel clues until the big reveal. In a thriller, you know on what or whom you need to focus. The story takes you on a thrilling chase to bring resolution.

Do you enjoy the titillation of romance between your characters? Perhaps you prefer living on the edge with action meant to scare or shock you.

Maybe you like a slightly different view imagining societies better or worse than your own. Perhaps you yearn to live in earlier times through historical fiction.

Of course, there’s always the escape into science fiction or fantasy. One offers you technology and related experiences that do not exist in reality … yet!  The other offers you magical elements that don’t exist in reality but offers valuable lessons. Yet another magical genre incorporates magical elements into the real world, taking one’s ordinary world to a new dimension.

Those who prefer nonfiction books get just as caught up in creative imaginings, whether the books are biographies, autobiographies, historical, spiritual philosophy, self-help or a whole host of other types.

One’s passion for what you read, whether it is fictional or not, drives your choice of books. Does it matter what kind of reader you are? No. The best thing about reading is you have no limits! Spread your wings and add something different to your reading list. No matter what you usually read, try something different. Spice up your life!!

I like a little bit of everything but my favorite would be suspense. I love a psychological thriller!

Me too, as long as they're not too scary. Dannye's book, "Second Chances, " gave me goosebumps.

Thanks, Greta!
Second Chances has a sequel that takes place 39 years later titled "The Threads That Bind."
Obviously, I'm fond of psychological thrillers myself, Thalia. :-)

Lately, I've gotten into the cozy mysteries. After I turn off the computer every evening, I get lost in figuring out whodunit. I've successfully solved the crime before the big reveal a few times. But most of the time, the ending surprises me.

I like literary fiction where the joy is in the language, from where meaning sprouts.

I have an eclectic taste which ranges from re-reading classic crime like Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, GK Chesterton to more modern writers like Stacey Halls, Wendy Holden, Lloyd Sheppherd, Anthony Horowitz & Sonia Velton.

I love history, especially social history so books like The Little Princesses by Marion Crawford, The Tobacconist by Robert Seethaler, Address Unknown by Katherine Kessman Taylor and The Foundling by Stacey Halls are right up my street.

I also love Dickens. As a Londoner born and bred (as am I) he is the writer who captures my City in some of the worst of times (no pun intended) for some yet the best of times for the minority. Another excellent writer on London is Peter Ackroyd .

Biographies are also a great read for me albeit more for fun as such. I especially go for sport, music, films because they are 3 of my other passions.

All in all I tend to read an average of one book per week and for me very few things beat opening a completely brand new book & seeing where it takes me.

Anthony, I also find myself reading a lot of books set in Great Britain, especially those in the 19th century, but perhaps not for the same reason as you. My husband used to tell me that I must have lived there in a past life! LOL

My tastes are eclectic as well in that I read nearly every genre. If life doesn't get in the way, I read about 4-5 books a week. You can imagine my joy when I discovered that the complex to which I moved recently has a lending library! Joy! If I don't have a book waiting for me, I feel like something is out of balance.

I also forgot to mention how much I love the James Herriot series of books which of course were the works that the TV and Films "All Creatures Great and Small" were based. I re-read them at least once every year.

My Favourite writers top 5

1.Dickens
2.Conan-Doyle
3.Peter Ackroyd
4.Anthony Horowitz
5.James Herriot

Anthony,
I'm also a big James Herriot fan and so was my husband. Most of the books I've been reading lately are by British authors. One thing I've found handy is in Faith Martin's books, she has a dictionary for American readers. Something I'll never understand, though, is how Brits can eat a full English breakfast and still be able to function for the rest of the day.

The full English breakfast thing is a bit over done to be honest. It is something that most folk have only now and again (very rarely in fact, usually maybe on a weekend or bank holiday).

Glad that you and your husband loved the James Herriot books.

If you haven't looked up Peter Wright then you may wish to check him too as he is one of the vets that Jim Wight aka James Herriot trained and he went on to write his own Yorkshire vet series of books. They are very light, and a great read.

That's good to know, Anthony. Like Greta, I read the Herriot books quite a while ago, but I am also interested in learning of others that I would enjoy as much! Thanks for sharing!

I will read forever because it lets me visit in my mind the worlds that I will never be able to see; it helps me put away the stresses of the day and relax into the rhythm of the story before me; it lets me bring to the surface and experience without regrets those feelings I hide away; it lets me re-experience the thrill of first love through someone else's eyes; it keeps my mind juiced so that it will never desert me; it is always there for me even when there's no one else. I will read forever no matter whether it is print or digital because the words will always call to me. ~ A Sassy Scribbler
