What Kind of Reader Are You?

Do you like the journey of discovery or do you prefer the chase? In a mystery book, you don’t know who the culprit is. You unravel clues until the big reveal. In a thriller, you know on what or whom you need to focus. The story takes you on a thrilling chase to bring resolution.

Do you enjoy the titillation of romance between your characters? Perhaps you prefer living on the edge with action meant to scare or shock you.

Maybe you like a slightly different view imagining societies better or worse than your own. Perhaps you yearn to live in earlier times through historical fiction.

Of course, there’s always the escape into science fiction or fantasy. One offers you technology and related experiences that do not exist in reality … yet!  The other offers you magical elements that don’t exist in reality but offers valuable lessons. Yet another magical genre incorporates magical elements into the real world, taking one’s ordinary world to a new dimension.

Those who prefer nonfiction books get just as caught up in creative imaginings, whether the books are biographies, autobiographies, historical, spiritual philosophy, self-help or a whole host of other types.

One’s passion for what you read, whether it is fictional or not, drives your choice of books. Does it matter what kind of reader you are? No. The best thing about reading is you have no limits! Spread your wings and add something different to your reading list. No matter what you usually read, try something different. Spice up your life!!

Counting My Lucky Stars

PictureNew Release
I am so fortunate. I may not have everything I want, but I have everything I need.

At times, we had to pinch our pennies so hard that poor ole Abraham Lincoln screamed for mercy. Even so, my husband, Robert, and I always managed to come out on top.

It hasn’t always been easy, though. Our world took a tumble when I was diagnosed with a weird, rare, and hard to pronounce blood disorder. Immune Thrombocytopenia or ITP is an autoimmune disease that targets and destroys blood platelets, leaving its victims prone to hemorrhaging either internally or externally. We took a wide ride on the ITP roller coaster as my platelet count rose and then unexpectedly plummeted back to single digits. The corticosteroids I had to take to suppress my immune system were just as bad, if not worse, than the actual disease.

The hardest part of having ITP was feeling like I was the only person in the world suffering from this scary, unpredictable malady. My family and friends were very supportive, but I had no one to talk to and tell me I wasn’t alone. However, when I found online support groups, the isolation ended, and I no longer felt like I was the only person in the world going through this experience.

After receiving so much encouragement and loving attention from my ITP family, I decided that no one was ever going to have to go through the fear and anxiety of ITP by themselves as I did. So, I wrote Heartaches and Miracles ten years ago to help and comfort ITPers and caregivers as they navigated their ITP journeys.

Even if you don’t have ITP, it’s essential for everyone to become aware of this disease. It’s not as mysterious as it once was. In Bill Clinton and James Patterson’s novel, The President is Missing, the primary character has ITP. How’s that for a formerly unknown disease?

A lot of positive research, changes in treatments, and new medications have come about during the past decade, so I updated the book to include the good news. I am now releasing the revised edition and invite everyone to grab a copy.

Thanks for helping us spread ITP Awareness. To my fellow ITPers, always remember:  I have ITP; it does not have me.

However, there’s more to Sweet & Sassy Scribblers than just the blog. The rest of the website will entice you to explore new titles in genres you may have never read before – women’s fiction, children’s and middle-grade books, science fiction and fantasy, thrillers and mysteries, as well as nonfiction topics such as well-being, spiritual psychology, along with selected poems and essays. Please look at our books and maybe try a few of them.

Why Sweet & Sassy?

You know the old adage that who you are at the moment is the average of all your life experiences? Well, when you find yourself in Act 3 of your life as we both do, you find that balancing your life is important. So, a little sweet, a little sassy is good for you – good for us.

Sweet means that compassion and empathy are important to our view of life. It not only opens us up to others, it also opens others up to us.

Sassy means that lessons learned in life have proven to us that striving to fit in or allowing others to determine our beliefs or paths is definitely worth resistance. Sassy allows us to be cheeky and full of life, without being concerned what others expect. It breaks down our inhibitions.

Both help us scribblers develop better characters, stories, and projects. So, it’s a win-win!

Being a Scribbler

Being a scribbler takes a person down roads you never expected to travel. Your imagination is the driver, and you are just along for the ride. Still, it’s never a spectator journey.

You become immersed in the emotions, the fears, the joys, and the hopes of your characters. You cry for them. You laugh with them. You feel their pain.

You nudge your imagination to give them what they desire. Sometimes, allowing them to suffer the consequences of their actions is the hardest thing to do as a scribbler.

A blessing of being a scribbler is that the adventures of your characters force you to face your own fears, recognize the walls you may have constructed, and open yourself up to living an authentic life.

I will read forever because it lets me visit in my mind the worlds that I will never be able to see; it helps me put away the stresses of the day and relax into the rhythm of the story before me; it lets me bring to the surface and experience without regrets those feelings I hide away; it lets me re-experience the thrill of first love through someone else's eyes; it keeps my mind juiced so that it will never desert me; it is always there for me even when there's no one else. I will read forever no matter whether it is print or digital because the words will always call to me. ~ A Sassy Scribbler
